Spotlight: Taos, New Mexico
Taos has long been known for its
vibrant arts community and world-class skiing. Situated at the foot of
the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Taos is also conveniently close to the
metropolitan delights of Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Denver, Colorado
Springs, and Vail. Visitors also enjoy visiting the historic Taos

Skiing
With an average snowfall of more than 300 inches, Taos Mountain is a fantastic ski destination. Taos averages more than 300 sunny days per year, so almost any day is a beautiful day for hitting the slopes. An impressive 110 trails on Taos Mountain accommodate beginners and experts alike. Water Sports Whitewater rafting is one of the most popular water sports in Taos. Rafters can plunge through the Taos Box, a 16-mile run through plenty of boat-rocking rapids in the 800-foot-deep Rio Grande Gorge. For more sedate rafting, leisurely trips can be launched on the Rio Grande or Rio Chama River. Several outfitters host kayaking trips, as well. For the fisherman, guided fly fishing trips take place year-round in the local rivers and streams. Anglers are sure to revel in the dramatic scenery that surrounds them. ![]()
Shopping
If shopping is your passion, you'll fall in love with Taos. Art galleries abound, selling the wares of local painters, potters, and weavers. Rugs, kilims, crafts, and folk arts are on display in a variety of shops. Quaint booksellers, jewelry boutiques, and gift stores are excellent places to wile away an afternoon in browsing. Clothing shops offer fine quality leathers, hand-sewn garments, and southwestern wear that celebrate the spirit of the region. Many shops and boutiques are within walking distance of Taos Plaza in the center of the city.
